60 Years of 280hp Walker Railmotors

    6 June 2010

The first of twelve 280hp Walker Railmotors entered service with the Victorian Railways on 6 June 1950 when it ran a Melbourne to Daylesford passenger service.

During their working life, the majority of the 280's were based at Spencer Street in Melbourne. They ran services to such places as Werribee, Leongatha, Wonthaggi, Wangarratta, Stony Point and Woomelang. The 280's relationship with the Daylesford line continued right up until September 1977, when they became the last unit to run a regular passenger train on the line.

The DSCR currently has two 280hp Walker Railmotors in its collection. 91RM was the first vehicle restored for use on the railway entering DSCR service in April 1990. 82RM is stored pending future restoration.

Twenty years later, 91RM continues to operate heritage services on the Daylesford line, continuing the connection they have had with the Daylesford line since that very first service in 1950.
