Brief History Of The Class.
During the 1970's and early 1980's there was a shortage of container wagons. The KMQ wagons were a stop gap measure until more bogie container wagons were built. There were converted from U, T and KAB underframes when the vehicles were scrapped between 1974 and 1984. KMQ wagons were numbered from 1 to 314.

Heritage Significance
KMQ200-K is of state significance as the only one in its class fully restored and operational, and may be the only one in preservation. It is a tangible reminder of the change from goods being carried in railway van loads to goods in container loads, and the efforts by the Victorian Railways to adapt to the change with minimal immediate expenditure.
