Brief History Of The Class.
The Y class were designed for shunting and light goods trains. The first locomotive in the original order for twenty five Clyde/GM G6B units arrived in September 1963. Further orders through the sixties increased the total number to seventy-five units. Withdrawals commenced in 1985 and large scale scrapings took place during 1991 and 1992. Less than half the class remain in service. Most are now found in Melbourne and major regional centers.
